Estadio BBVA — “El Gigante de Acero” (the Steel Giant), the 50,000+ seat home of Liga MX side Rayados — hosts four 2026 World Cup matches, including the 1,000th match in World Cup history (Tunisia vs Japan, June 20). Notably, Monterrey is the only Mexican host city without a Mexico match: El Tri plays at Estadio Azteca and Estadio Akron only. For visitors, the planning advantages are real: all four kickoffs are at 8 p.m. local time, dodging the worst of the northern Mexico afternoon heat, and the stadium has a solid Metrorrey-and-Uber connection from central Monterrey.
This piece covers match-day logistics. For where to sleep, the walkable Centro core, and how Monterrey itself works as a destination, see the Monterrey trip guide.
The schedule
Estadio BBVA hosts four matches between June 14 and June 29, 2026 — three group stage games and a Round of 32, per the FIFA Monterrey host city page:
| Date | Kickoff (CT) | Stage | Matchup |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 14 | 20:00 | Group | Sweden vs Tunisia |
| June 20 | 20:00 | Group | Tunisia vs Japan (1,000th match in WC history) |
| June 24 | 20:00 | Group | South Africa vs South Korea |
| June 29 | 20:00 | Round of 32 | TBD |
All four kickoffs are at the same time — 20:00 local. The stadium is officially called “Estadio Monterrey” for the tournament.
Getting to Estadio BBVA
The stadium is in Guadalupe, the municipality immediately east of central Monterrey, about 8–10 km from the Centro. There are two practical no-car options.
Metrorrey + park-and-ride or short Uber
Metrorrey’s Line 2 reaches Parque Fundidora station, where the Fan Festival sits. To reach Estadio BBVA itself, you need to combine the Metro with either a park-and-ride shuttle or a short Uber from the closer eastern stations. The host committee runs a dedicated FIFA shuttle service from downtown hotels on match days.
Uber direct from central Monterrey
From Centro or Barrio Antiguo, Uber to Estadio BBVA typically runs 150–300 pesos ($8–17 USD) and 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. On match days expect surge pricing and longer post-match waits.
For most visitors based in central Monterrey or San Pedro, Uber is the cleanest match-day option.
Driving
Possible if you have a rental — Monterrey is car-friendly. Stadium-area parking is limited on match days. Most visitors find Uber simpler.
The post-match return
The 8 p.m. kickoffs end around 22:30, with post-match Uber surge real for 30–60 minutes after the final whistle. Realistic options:
- Walk a kilometer toward the surrounding Guadalupe neighborhood and request from a less-crowded zone
- Wait out the surge at one of the nearby Guadalupe restaurants — many extend hours on match days
- Plan a slower 60–90 minute return to a central Monterrey hotel
The 8 p.m. kickoff timing is actually a comfort advantage compared to other Mexican host cities — the heat of the day has passed, and the late-night return runs in cooler air.
Fan Festival at Parque Fundidora
The official FIFA Fan Festival Monterrey runs at Parque Fundidora — the former steel mill turned cultural park — on match days throughout the tournament, June 11 through July 19, 2026.
Practical details:
- Free admission, no advance registration required, subject to first-come capacity
- Giant screens for live match broadcasts
- Music programming includes Chayanne, Imagine Dragons, Grupo Firme, Enrique Iglesias
- Match days only — the festival isn’t continuously open
- Family-friendly with food and activities
Getting to Parque Fundidora:
- Metrorrey Line 2 to Parque Fundidora station — at the park entrance
- Dedicated FIFA shuttle from downtown hotels on match days
- Walking from Centro is about 30 minutes east — long but feasible in cooler hours
Parque Fundidora itself is one of Monterrey’s best parks for non-match days — the former Compania Fundidora de Fierro y Acero industrial complex was converted into a 142-hectare park with the Horno3 steel museum, walking trails, and pedestrian-friendly internal roads.
Where to base for the match days
For all four matches, Centro / Barrio Antiguo is the most logical base — walking distance to the Metro Line 2, easy Uber to the stadium, and adjacent to the Parque Fundidora Fan Festival.
San Pedro Garza García also works as a base if comfort and dining quality matter more than walkable downtown access — but plan for Uber to both Estadio BBVA and the Fan Festival.
Match-day pacing
Monterrey summer averages 30–38°C with intense dry heat. Estadio BBVA is open-roof — exposed to direct sun. The 8 p.m. kickoffs help significantly: by 19:00 the sun is lower and temperatures drop into the high 20s°C.
Practical notes:
- Pre-match outdoor time still requires water and sun cover — the platform queue and stadium approach run in the late afternoon
- The dry heat pulls water out faster than visitors from humid climates expect; pre-hydrate the day before
- Refillable bottles allowed inside
- Cooler late-night return — light layer optional but rarely needed
The 1,000th match in World Cup history (June 20)
Tunisia vs Japan, June 20, 20:00 CT. This is the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history. The historical weight aside, the match is a real group fixture with two competitive teams.
The atmosphere at both Estadio BBVA and Parque Fundidora that night will be heightened. Plan around it:
- Hotel availability in central Monterrey is tighter for June 19–21 than for the other matches
- Restaurants in Barrio Antiguo and San Pedro will need 2–3 week reservations for the evening
- Metro Line 2 and the FIFA shuttle will both be at peak capacity — buy passes early
- Parque Fundidora’s Fan Festival will be at full capacity an hour before kickoff
Match details and Fan Festival information are based on official sources from the FIFA Monterrey host city page and the official Monterrey Fan Festival page, accurate as of June 11, 2026. Shuttle schedules and Metro service adjustments confirm closer to each match — verify with the host committee in the week before your visit.
