Group Stage in Zapopan: Estadio Akron at the 2026 World Cup

Estadio Akron (home of Chivas, the Liga MX side based in Guadalajara) hosts four group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup — the fewest of any host venue, but with a Mexico match on June 18 and Group A’s tournament opener on June 11. The stadium sits in Zapopan, the suburb west of central Guadalajara, not in the central city itself. No knockouts are played in Mexico — every match at Akron is a group game.

This piece covers the match-day logistics. For where to sleep, the actual city, and the broader Jalisco trip, see the Guadalajara trip guide.

The schedule

Estadio Akron hosts four matches between June 11 and June 26, 2026 — all group stage, per the FIFA Guadalajara host city page:

DateKickoff (CDMX/Guadalajara local)StageMatchup
June 1121:00Group ASouth Korea vs (Group A opener)
June 18TBDGroup AMexico vs South Korea
June 23TBDGroupColombia vs DR Congo
June 26TBDGroupUruguay vs Spain

The stadium hosts no Round of 32, Round of 16, or knockout matches — those all sit at US venues.

Getting to Estadio Akron

The stadium is in Zapopan, about 15 km northwest of central Guadalajara. There are two practical no-car routes.

Tren Eléctrico Line 3 + walk or short ride

Line 3 of the Tren Eléctrico Urbano connects central Guadalajara to Zapopan. The Periférico Belenes station is the closest stop to the stadium area, but it’s still about 3–4 km from the stadium itself — you’ll need a short Uber or local bus from there to reach the gates.

Uber direct from central Guadalajara

From Colonia Americana or Centro Histórico, Uber to Estadio Akron typically runs 150–400 pesos ($8–22 USD) and 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. On match days expect surge pricing and longer post-match wait times.

For visitors based in a central Guadalajara hotel, Uber is usually the simpler choice for a single match.

Driving

Possible if you have a rental. Stadium-area parking is limited and expensive on match days. Most visitors find Uber more practical.

The post-match return

Post-match Uber surge from Estadio Akron is real — the pickup zones can take 30–60 minutes to clear. Realistic options:

  • Walk a kilometer toward the surrounding neighborhood and request from a quieter pickup point
  • Wait out the surge with food at one of the nearby restaurants — many stay open late on match days
  • Plan a slower return to central Guadalajara, budgeting 60–90 minutes from final whistle to a Colonia Americana hotel

Fan Festival at Plaza Liberación

The official FIFA Fan Festival Guadalajara runs at Plaza Liberación — in the historic center, surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Teatro Degollado, and the Palacio de Gobierno — for the full 39-day tournament, June 11 through July 19.

Practical details:

  • Free admission with no prior registration required
  • Large stage with the Cathedral as backdrop and a 40-meter screen
  • The festival extends beyond Plaza Liberación to Plaza de Armas and Plaza Fundadores — effectively turning the historic center into a connected festival circuit
  • Open daily during match windows; closing hours depend on match schedules

The location is unusual among 2026 host cities — most central Mexican squares aren’t set up for tens of thousands of fans simultaneously, but the Plaza Liberación was designed for civic gatherings and the Cathedral-Teatro-Government Palace surroundings give it a distinctly Mexican atmosphere.

Getting to Plaza Liberación: walking from a Centro Histórico base, or Tren Eléctrico Line 3 (any central Guadalajara station — most are within walking distance).

Where to base for the match days

For all four matches, sleep in Colonia Americana / Chapultepec / Lafayette or Centro Histórico. Both are reasonable bases for both the stadium trip and the Fan Festival.

Zapopan as a base isn’t recommended unless you’re attending multiple matches and want a stadium-adjacent short stay — the suburb has limited evening character compared to the central neighborhoods.

The Mexico vs South Korea match (June 18)

Mexico’s group-stage match in Guadalajara is the city’s marquee World Cup day. Plan around it:

  • Hotel availability in central Guadalajara is tight for the entire week around this match
  • Uber surge on the day of the match will be more extreme than usual
  • Plaza Liberación Fan Festival will be at full capacity; arrive early for non-ticket-holders
  • Restaurants in Colonia Americana will need 2–3 week reservations for that evening

Match-day pacing

Guadalajara summer averages 17–28°C with afternoon rain. Estadio Akron is open-roof — exposed to the weather. Practical notes:

  • The June 11 21:00 kickoff is during the late-evening cool — light layer useful for the return
  • Bring a compact rain layer for the post-storm wet streets, especially in late June and July
  • Refillable water bottle for the platform and queue
  • The Tequila Express and other Tequila day-trip tours still run on match days — but allow extra return buffer if you want to catch evening matches at the Fan Festival

Match details and Fan Festival information are based on official sources from the FIFA Guadalajara host city page and the Guadalajara Host Committee Fan Festival page, accurate as of June 11, 2026. Specific kickoff times for some group matches confirm closer to each match — verify with the host committee in the week before your visit.
